The A**hole Monolouges

Every year talented group of local comedians and actors come together to present stories surrounding one theme...A**holes.  Before your delicate sensibilities become ruffled by this subject I should state that to date these A**holes have raised over $10,000 for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA)

This year's batch of A**holes that will be performing on January 8th at the Howlin Wolf Northshore include Chris Rose and Redbean.

Chris Rose is an A**hole columnist for the Times Picayune and local blogger hero.  RedBean is a local bad boy and A**hole comedian. Both will be bringing their best tales of, and about, A**holes.

So don't be an A**hole...come on out to the Howlin Wolf Northshore on January 8th and enjoy this lovely evening with The A**hole Monologues.

Here's a little RedBean to get you in the mood...for some A**holes.

New Years Eve with Frontiers!!

Frontiers: the premier tribute to the 80's rock pioneers Journey will make a return appearance to Mandeville to help the Northshore bring in the New Year the right way.

Frontiers has carried on the banner of separate ways, summer lovin', and open arms. As a tribute act, few - if any - have such a colorful back-story that blurs the line between tribute and the "real deal".

Vocalist Jeremey Hunsicker spent time writing and recording with Journey in the summer of 2007, his efforts contributing in part to the platinum selling CD/DVD set “Revelation,” which went on to earn Hunsicker a Platinum Record from the RIAA. Rounding out the touring production of Frontiers is guitarist Stephen Chesney, original Frontiers bassist Greg Eanes, Gary Hall on drums, and Steve Fordham on keyboards.

Since beginning to tour full time in 2008, Frontiers has sold out clubs and theaters across the country, and has experienced an endless demand for their performances matched by few other tribute acts in the country.

So get ready to pop some corks and bring in ring in the New Year with The Howlin Wolf Nortshore and Frontiers!!!

The Radiators

For twenty- six years The Radiators Have been gracing music lovers with some of the most intense live performances ever seen, and on Friday December 11th at Howlin' Wolf Northshore, the band will be sure not to disappoint.

Since that legendary first jam session in key keyboardists Ed Volker's garage, The Radiators have developed into a strong national act that has obtained the uncanny ability to choose the proper song for any given moment. The band's
intuitive grasp of each others moves, coupled with a repertoire of nearly 1300 songs provides a basis for a fresh and spontaneous approach to their music. As a result of their marathon length live shows and relentless touring schedule The Radiators have become one of the hottest acts that the city of New Orleans has produced.

Over the years, their music has evolved into a living & breathing entity, and one never knows what will happen at a Radiators show... not even the Rads!

Here's the boys playing one of their greats a couple of years ago:

Dirt: Alice in Chains Tribute

There were few bands that emerged from the 90s Seattle grunge scene that rocked as hard as Alice in Chains. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell quickly became the backbone for the grunge movement alongside Pearl Jam and Nirvana however, their reign at the top was constantly hindered by Layne's problems with drug abuse. In 1997 I missed seeing them live, but my friends who did said that Layne spent most of the concert lying down on the stage floor in a incoherent heroin nod.

Sadly, Layne never regained control of his addiction and was found dead in his apartment of an overdose of heroine and cocaine in 2002.

Jerry Cantrell has since moved on with the original members of Alice in Chains to release a couple of solo albums. Recently, the band has been putting the finishing touches on their first release as Alice in Chains since Layne's death. The album "Black Gives Way to Blue" is set to be released later this year and surprisingly features Elton John on the title track.

While we cannot bring you the original lineup of Alice in Chains, the Howlin Wolf Northshore can provide the next best thing. Dirt: Alice in Chains Tribute will be performing November 26th. If you were ever a part of the flannel militia in 90s, this is a show not to be missed!

Know Your Enemy: Rage Against the Machine Tribute

Rage Against The Machine stepped into the forefront of the Southern California music scene in 1991 with their unique blend of Rap, Hardcore, and revolutionary political views. They remained at the top of the "pissed-off revolutionary" music scene for many years until their breakup in 2000.

Sadly, you cannot see the real Rage, but the Howlin Wolf New Orleans has got the next best thing. Know Your Enemy, a RATM tribute band will be at the Wolf on Friday, November 13 to regale you with all of Rage's best.

Flashback

It's unavoidable!!! The 80s are back in every way. The music. The fashion. Little bits and pieces of the 80s are resurfacing in almost everything "new" that is coming out. The problem is that the younger generation doesn't realize that it is just a regurgitation of the 80s generation. They have no context to put all of these fashions and new bands into, so some are actually under the impression that it is new.

Well we here at the Howlin Wolf Northshore have a solution. It is a little 80s history lesson called Flashback!!! Flashback is a band hailing from Los Angeles that plays nothin' but the 80s. It will be a rare opportunity for the younger generation to catch a glimpse of where everything that they like came from.

The members of Flashback sport identities from the heroes of 80s Glam rock. Present in the band is Michael Bret, Billy, Flash, and Shaun Jovi (you don't have to look too hard to discover who they are emulating, check em' out here). Here's what the band has to say for themselves:
We as FLASHBACK are going to bring back some memories that you may have forgotten, but once held onto so closely as you lived through the most radical decade ever. At the time MTV actually played videos! I know can you believe it?? They featured bands that had guys dressing like chicks, and chicks dressing like…well you know. Crazy hair and make-up was essential, the more you had and the more flamboyant the better. We fell in love with the era and embraced the music and the stars who created it like no other. We promise to re-create some of them and give you a hell of a time to remember. Reach to the back of your closet and pull out some of that old flashy clothes, because the FLASHBACK has started! Come and take a trip with us!! We hope to see all of you there!!

So come on out and have a Flashback to the 80s with the Howlin Wolf Northshore on Friday, October 30th.

See ya at the Wolf!!!

Rebirth and Tab

The weekend of October 23 and 24 is going to be a great weekend to be at the Howlin Wolf Northshore!!! That's because Friday the 23rd we will have the one, the only, REBIRTH BRASS BAND!! Also Saturday we will be featuring blues legend TAB BENOIT!!

I don't think either of these two acts need much introduction, but here's a little update on what's been happening with them lately.

Rebirth has had a busy year. After struggling through a painful recovery from a stroke, Phil "Tuba" Frazier made his triumphant return to the band at a show at the New Orleans Howlin Wolf back in January (you can read about that here). From there the band rebounded quickly and was offered roles on the pilot for the upcoming HBO series about New Orleans, "The Treme." And to finish out this groundbreaking year for the band Derek Tab, Rebirth's drummer and the founder of The Roots of Music Foundation, was nominated to be CNN's 2009 Hero of the Year (you can find info on the honor here). The Howlin Wolf Northshore is incredibly proud of Rebirth Brass Band's accomplishments this year, and we are equally excited to have them perform on Friday, October 23rd. Make plans to be here. A Rebirth show is never to be missed!!

For Tab Benoit the hits just keep on coming. With 13 releases since 1992 (busy man) and a Grammy nomination in 2006, Tab's brilliant Louisiana Blues never fails to make its mark. Furthermore, Tab's work as an environmental activist for wetlands conservation shows his love for his home state and its future. He founded the "Voice of the Wetlands," an organization which puts on an annual music festival in Houma to raise money for the conservation effort. Tab will be gracing the Howlin Wolf Northshore with his presence on Saturday, October 24th.

So come on out to the Howlin Wolf Northshore the weekend of the 23rd and 24th, and celebrate some Louisiana heroes, and hear some of the best music that Louisiana has to offer. SEE YA AT THE WOLF!!!!Stumble Upon Toolbar

Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes

As stated on Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes Website: "it's time once again for the weather to cool off in New Orleans, and that means that Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes are home for the month!!"

And thank God for that (both the cool weather and the imminent return of the band)!!! It's this time of year when going outside doesn't feel like your walking into the bowels of hell. Johnny joins the rest of New Orleans as we emerge from our collective heat-resistant fortresses in some kind of tropic reverse hibernation. Praise be to God, Allah, Buddha, or Krishna (whoever was responsible for the idea of fall in New Orleans)!!! Sorry for going on about the weather, but the other day was the first day in a looooooonnnnggggg time that walking outside didn't feel like I was walking into a wet moldy gym sock that's been baked in an oven.

The amazing Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes will be gracing the Howlin Wolf with its presence on both sides of the lake. They will be on the Northshore this Friday October 16, and then in New Orleans October 31. Best catch them at either of these two shows because after that they are headin' out west, then a quick stop in the keys, and then it's Bon Voyage as they are performing at this year's Jam Cruise.

Not only will this year's Jam Cruise feature a performance by Johnny Sketch, but I am quite certain that it will feature about a million covers of "I'm on a Boat."

Anyways, please come out this Friday, October 16 to the Northshore Howlin Wolf and see our local heroes Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes!! It will surely be awesome!!Stumble Upon Toolbar

Derek Tabb: Hero

Derek Tabb is so much more than just the Drummer for the Rebirth Brass Band. He is a local hero. Growing up in New Orleans taught Derek many valuable lessons as to music's power to keep kids out of the streets and away from the drug dealers. He is a living testimony to that. However, Derek has gone a step further to give back to the art form that just might have saved his life. He worked to form "The Roots of Music Foundation." It is best described by the foundation's website:
"The Roots of Music program is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded by Rebirth Brass band drummer, Derrick Tabb, Allison Reinhardt, and Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews. Having seen and experienced the losses of Hurricane Katrina and the daily challenges facing New Orleans' inner-city youths, they were concerned the youth and the music culture of New Orleans were in jeopardy of being lost. From this concern grew the idea and ultimately the formation of The Roots of Music as a free, after-school academic tutoring AND music education program for low-income middle-school students in New Orleans."

The television network CNN has recognized Derek's achievements, and has chosen to nominate him as 2009's Hero of the Year. This is a wonderful honor to a great man, and we here at the Howlin Wolf would greatly appreciate your taking a moment to go to CNN's website and vote for Derek. We as New Orleanians need to he supporting every hero we have!!

The voting page can be found here.

Live Band Karaoke

Have you ever had dreams of being a rock star? Admit it! Of course you have.

For some people, the closest you can get to being the singer in a band is to stand on stage with a Karaoke Machine and follow the bouncing ball on a little TV screen. For all of you who grew up singing into your hairbrush while dancing wildly around your room and playing a wicked air guitar, simply singing along with a box is not enough to fulfill your dreams.

The Howlin Wolf Northshore and Black Magnolia has got the cure for what ails you: LIVE BAND KARAOKE!!! Every Thursday night you can hop onstage with a real band and rock out with your...well never mind. Plus, we're not talkin' bout just any ole band, we're talkin' bout local bad asses Black Magnolia.

Dave Mathews Tribute Band

We here at the Howlin Wolf Northshore have become quite the lovers of the tribute band. Especially when they pack almost the same punch as the original, or in the case of Frontier: The Journey Tribute Band, they are almost better than the original.

While being better than Dave Matthews is nearly impossible, the Dave Matthews Tribute Band definitely puts forth a stunning re-creation of Dave's hits. Don't believe me? Check 'em out:

Next to the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, Dave Matthews probably has the most tribute bands in existence, and the Howlin Wolf Northshore is proud to have the best!!! The Dave Matthews Tribute Band will be gracing us with their presence on October 10th, and so should you!!Stumble Upon Toolbar

Coscino

With the presence of the new Internet age well at hand and a way to connect with fans like never before, bands are allowed to be who they truly are. If you want to be a Speed Metal Polka band that plays nothing but covers of Aja songs...well there is probably a small group of fans out there that are into what you are playing. What this has led to is a million little sub-genres of music and bands that answer the question of, "What kind of music do you play?" with "Oh, well we are a post-punk, screamo, grind, thrashcore band, with a nu metal kind of thing happenin."

My question is, "Where are the ROCK bands?" Just Rock, only Rock, and nothing but the Rock! In an age of flavored everything, I want black coffee, a plain donut, a regular cigarette, and a REAL ROCK BAND!!!

That's where Coscino comes in. A collection of guys who have lived, breathed, eaten, and poo'ed Rock since they were old enough to hold a guitar pick or drumsticks. Cut them and nothing comes out...cause it's just Rock in there!

Well, I've ranted enough, but if you're like me and you're missing the days of "That Old Timey Rock and Roll" come on out to the Howlin Wolf Northshore and catch a band that has been waving the Rock flag in Louisiana for decades.

The show is on Saturday, October 3rd. The show will open with 3rd Echo, another local crew who is bringing Rock back to the forefront.

Bonerama

On one particularly hard-drinkin' night out in New Orleans (when I first moved here) I ended up bowing out gracefully while my friends carried forth to the Maple leaf, which just so happened to be stumbling distance from my house. The next memory I have of that evening is my friends banging at my door at 5 o'clock in the morning. The only words that they could muster in their collectively plastered state of mind was, "four trombones!!!"

"What are you talking about," I replied.
"Dude, you don't understand (almost falling over).....FOUR TROMBONES.......it was awesome!!!"

It took me awhile but I figured out that they were referring to the band that they just seen at the Maple Leaf. None of them could remember the name of the band that night, or the next morning, but they could remember the overall awesomeness that they had experienced.

It wasn't until I was out stumbling into some random bar that I placed the name Bonerama with what my friends could only describe as, "FOUR TROMBONES!!!"

Bonerama has been flailing their trombone assault on New Orleans for almost a decade. They currently have five releases of mostly live material. Much like any other brass band the real experience is in seeing them live, and on September the 25th the Northshore will have the opportunity. The Howlin Wolf Northshore will be presenting a bonerific evening that will funk you up fo' sho'.

Zoso: The Ultimate Tribute to Led Zeppelin

I don't even think I should have to write anything in this blog post to try to get you to come to this show.

Led Zeppelin were freakin' Gods!!! I guess that would make Zoso: The Ultimate Tribute to Led Zeppelin, demigods. Either way, they rock old Zepplin tunes with an authority that must have come from above.

Whenever Frontier (the Journey Tribute Band) came to the Northshore Wolf (can be read here), I bravely stated that you could close your eyes and play one of thier songs and not be able to tell the difference between Frontier and the real band. Well with Zoso you don't even have to close your eyes. They actually look the part!! They mimic Zepplin's every move, and they do it very well.

This is truly a show not to be missed. So come on out to the Howlin Wolf Northshore on Saturday, August 22 and be a part of this wonderful night!!

The death of Bradley Nowell sadly brought an end to Sublime. Brad's music, however, lives on through Wrong Way, a tribute band who will be bringing the music of one of the most seminal ska-punk band ever to the Howlin Wolf Northshore on August 6. Wrong Way will be performing with another tribute to a 90s powerhouse act, Grassroots, a 3-11 tribute band.

Bag of Donuts

Bag of Donuts simply puts on a great show....period. Oftentimes cover bands don't get the credit they deserve, but these guys are a collective library of music. It would be hard to name very many top 40 hits that they don't know or haven't played at one time, and that takes major talent.

They started their reign as New Orleans premier party band in the late 80s, and have maintained that status ever since. They have released a couple of albums over the years, but the true Bag of Donuts experience only happens by seeing them live. If you go to a Donuts show and don't dance, someone needs to check your pulse 'cause your probably dead.

So come on down to the Howlin Wolf Northshore on Saturday (August 1) and be ready to shake it with Bag of Donuts.

Ms Planet Beach Northshore

Q: What could be better than seeing the hottest women in Louisiana strut their stuff in Bikinis?
A: Having the Rebirth Brass Band playing while they do it!

Q: Where could such a thing occur? Heaven? Shangri La?
A: The Howlin Wolf Northshore on Friday, Jul 17, 2009 at 10:00 PM!

Anymore questions?

Well how about some information:
The c
ompetition on Friday is going to be the final for the Northshore regionals. The winner will go on to compete in state, (and hopefully) national, and international pageants. The winner of Ms. Planet Beach International 2009 will receive a $100,000 cash contract with Planet Beach, the covermodel of the 2009 Ms. Planet Beach International Calendar, a waived franchise fee of $30,000 to open her own Planet Beach, a custom-made Ms. Planet Beach diamond pendant necklace, travel opportunities and other prizes.

Sounds exciting. So come on out the the Northshore Wolf on Friday and see one lucky girl's dreams come true.

And here's some highlights from last year's International competition to get your heart racing.

Susan Cowsill

Susan Cowsill began her musical career in a way that should have been made into a TV show. She was in a "bubblegum pop" family band during the 60s.

Oh....wait....that was a TV show.

However, the family band that she was a part of went by the name The Cowsills and not The Partridges. And unlike the Partridges, the Cowsills' music was actually listenable; creating such great tunes as "Indian Summer" and the title track from the hit movie "Hair."

Here's another Cowsills' hit:

Susan has since moved on with a successful solo career, and was kind enough to make New Orleans her home base in 1993. She released her first album "Just Beleive It" in 2005, and is currently in the studio working on another with her husband, and drummer, Russ.

The Howlin Wolf Northshore is proud to have Susan perform on Friday, June 26 with The Junior League. The show starts at 9:30 and you can purchase tickets by clicking on the tickets link from the Howlin Wolf Northshore Website.Stumble Upon Toolbar

The Benjy Davis Project

It's great to see local Louisiana artists about to break into the national scene. Especially when the music being made is as heartfelt and genuine as The Benjy Davis Project has created since 2001. The Baton Rouge boys are poised to step into the national spotlight, and with the help of their latest release "Dust," they are almost guaranteed all the success that they want.

The Howlin Wolf is proud to take part in showcasing this fabulous band's talent, and you as fans need to ensure that you are front and center at this show. Who knows, next time you have the opportunity to see them it may have to be from the nosebleed section of your closest "meglo-arena-dome."

So come on out to the Howlin Wolf Northshore on Saturday, June 20th and participate in the support of these local rising stars.

Tickets can be purchased by clicking on the Tickets link from the Howlin Wolf Northshore Website.

The Producers

For those of us who grew up in the 80s, seeing the return of acid wash jeans, bright neon sweatshirts, and leggings probably causes you to cringe a bit.

However, the one facet of the 80s that we are loving to see the return of is the music.

Here's where the Howlin Wolf Northshore comes in...

The Producers
, a rare New Wave gem from the 80s who rarely tours anymore, is making a special trip to the Northshore Wolf on Saturday May 30.

This is a must see show both for those who grew up during the Reagan Era, and those who are coming up during the 80s revival era.

The show will begin at 9pm and will start with The Chocolate City Rockers (great name guys).

You can buy tickets by clicking on the Tickets link from the Howlin Wolf Northshore Webpage.

Journey Tribute Band: Frontier

To say that you don't like Journey is damn near un-American. Even if you don't like all of their songs you have to admit that "Don't Stop Believing" is a guilty pleasure, and everyone has slow danced to "Open Arms" or "Faithfully" at a school dance.

Fan or not, the folks at the Howlin Wolf Northshore have got a treat for you.

Frontier, the number one Journey tribute band will rockin' Mandeville on Saturday, June 13. To say that they are a cover band is an understatement because you can close your eyes and not be able to tell the difference between Steve Perry and Jeremey Hunsicker (Frontier's front man).

Check it out for yourself
